Is anyone home? It's not like squirrels care. They'll chew their way through your soffits, siding or even your roof. It doesn't matter if you don't want tenants they will welcome themselves in your home. Once it takes up residence in your home that is where it gets costly.
The amount of damage squirrels can make is mind boggling. Squirrels love to chew. Once inside your attic they will gnaw on the wires which can cause them to short out and start a house fire. They will also tear up the insulation and use it to help build their nest. Plus, they will turn it into their own private bathroom and leave their urine and feces on it. At that point, the smell from the insulation can be smelt throughout the house which is very strong and unpleasant. It's hard to get rid off unless all the insulation is removed, the attic disinfected, and reapply new insulation.
